A Presumed History... [the short version]

John Nelson Roblin & Edith Anna Membery RoblinPhilip Roblin was born sometime before 1725 in the Bristol, Gloucestershire area of England (or possibly Wales). Philip married Grace Meredith (Born 1729 in Gloucestershire) in 1747. Grace died in 1748, the same year their son Owen was born. Grace may have died in childbirth. In 1749 Philip married Anne Meredith (Born 1729 in Gloucestershire). Anne was likely related to Grace, though there is no evidence of this of yet. Philip and Anne had four children, Ann (born 1752), Philip (born 1753), John (born 1754) and Stephen (born 1761). Anne, Philip & John were born in Gloucestershire while Stephen was born in Bergen, NJ, USA.

Philip and Anne (Meredith) Roblin and the four older children left England and arrived in the Colonies around 1755 and appear to have first settled near what is now Troy, NY (near Albany). By 1761 the family had moved to Bergen County, NJ where Stephen was born. Ann's future husband, Nicholas Wessels and John's future wife, (Nicholas's sister) Sarah were both born in Bergen, NJ between 1759 and 1761. Records also place sons Owen and Philip in NJ in 1766.

By 1767 sons Owen and Philip have moved to Orange County, NY. Philip marries Elizabeth Esther Miller (born 1754 in Orange, NY) in 1770. Philip and Elizabeth's first five children, born between 1773 and 1782 were born in Orange, NY. The other three, born between 1784 and 1788 were born in Ontario Canada.

Very little is known about Owen's wife other than she is listed as being in New York City at British Headquarters in 1782 but not aboard the ship traveling to Canada in 1783. One can assume she died around 1782. Their four children were all born between 1767 and 1775 in Orange, NY and were with Owen on the ship to Canada in 1783.

Owen has been placed in New Jersey participating in the Revolutionary War (on the British side) near Manhattan in 1780. Owen & Philip's families are later traced to British Headquarters in New York City in 1783, before leaving by ship to Canada. They spend the winter of 1783 at Sorel in Québec (on the St. Lawrence river), leaving in the spring of 1784 for the Bay of Quinte in Ontario, Canada.

Ann (Roblin) and Nicholas Wessels and John and Sarah (Wessels) Roblin (and possibly brother Stephen Roblin) appear to stay behind in New Jersey throughout the Revolutionary War period. All four of John and Sarah's children were born in New Jersey between 1778 and 1783. Ann and Nicholas's first five children were born in New Jersey between 1777 and 1787. Their last six children were all born in Sophiasburg, Ontario between 1789 and 1799. It appears that Ann and Nicholas Wessels & family, John and Sarah Roblin & family, and likely Stephen Roblin all moved to Ontario about 1788.

Owen Sr., Ann & Nicholas, Philip & Elizabeth, John & Sarah, Stephen and virtually all of their children lived the remainder of their lives and died in the area of Adolphustown/Sophiasburg in Ontario, Canada.

Credits! - The following people contributed enormously to this web site:
John Membery Roblin, Sr. "Jack" - Dad started collecting family information way back before there were personal computers. He's the one who got me started. He also supplied most of the family photos (to come). This project is dedicated to him.
Patricia Mastroianni Roblin - My fantastic wife and best friend for almost 40 years! She keeps turning up more clues and finds new directions to dig.
Nathan Vincent Roblin - I do this mostly for you, and hope you will keep searching for future generations.
Richard Owen Roblin III - Dick contributed two amazing articles to this site that tell the human story as if he were there. Dick will also be a contributing editor for the web site project.
Joseph Patrick Maroney - Joe gave me the info I needed to fill out the Maroney family tree for my niece Megan and nephew Ian. I'll keep looking for a Gettysburg link Joe!
Linda Herman - Linda has righted a number of former wrongs in this part of the Roblin story. She's an amazing resource and one of the first people I go to with questions, or to bounce speculations off of. Linda is related to the Roblins through the Wessels branch.
Tim Ryeland - Tim has massive amounts of information online at his web site. I also got the idea to use the "TNG" site software for this site by looking at his. Tim, Linda and Dick are the Key-Three sources.
